Namibia Conservation Travel Volunteer Program

The Conservation Travel Foundation is seeking passionate volunteers to participate as an education assistant in English and computer lessons at Grootberg Primary School in Namibia, under the supervision of the local teachers. The volunteer will engage in long term sustainable projects with the goal of improving the livelihoods of both the children and community. In addition, the volunteer will have the opportunity to reach out to the local community through projects aimed at bettering the quality of education for all community members.

why It Matters?

This project allows the school and Conservation Tourism Foundation volunteers to work in harmony and help the community’s children gain essential skills and work towards a brighter future. This volunteer experience will positively impact development in conservation, social welfare and education for the long term. Ultimate Safaris is a Namibian ecotourism safari company that monitors the Conservation Travel Foundation’s projects. It is dedicated to the protection and sustainability of dedication wilderness areas. 100% of its funds are invested in ethical and socially responsible projects.

Jason Nott, Coordinator

Jason is Foundation Coordinator and has been living in Namibia since he was a child and has extensive educational and work experience in conservation and sustainable tourism. Jason believes this program allows participants to enhance the lives of local communities, ensuring long term preservation of Namibia’s natural resources.

Tristan Cowley, Trustee

Tristan is a Foundation Trustee and grew up with a love and passion for the environment. Following his family’s tourism footsteps, Tristan has been specializing in naturalist guided safaris to Namibia since his founded Tou Safaris in 2003. In 2008 it merged with another organization to create Ultimate Safaris, a renowned specialist guided safaris company.

Martin Webb-Bowen, Trustee

Martin is a Foundation Trustee, helping oversee the running of Ultimate Safaris. From the 1990s until its 2008 incorporation into Ultimate Safaris, Martin ran a Namibian company called SandyAcre Safaris. Martin has a passion for assisting in rural development and conservation practices, as well as arranging unforgettable individual and group holidays in Namibia.

Festival de Aviturismo

The Festival de Aviturismo is an annual birding event that takes place in Calakmul. You will experience informative activities such as birding observations, conferences, and workshops. It recently celebrated its second year and its organizers are thrilled to begin preparations for its third in fall 2016! What really helps this festival soar is its volunteers. Volunteer roles would include event and marketing coordinators as well as translators and interpreters.

why It Matters?

The Festival de Aviturismo has a mission to promote the conservation of birds found in Campeche and to strengthen birding tourism in the area. It also advocates for bird watching and for the pure joy of experiencing the hundreds of species of birds in Campeche through educational courses and hands-on workshops.

If you find yourself in Calakmul at a time other than the birding festival, fear not! There is a plethora of captivating birds in Calakmul year round. A great way to discover them is by making a trip to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, home to 350 types of migratory and native birds such as the Great Curassow. Both around Calakmul’s ruins and deeper in the forest provides great observation opportunities for birds including the Singing Quail and Ovenbird, as well as the Pale-billed Woodpecker and Woodcreeper. Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve is another birder’s paradise, home to over 300 species living among the varied vegetation.

Pan de Pomuch

Pan de Pomuch, the mouth-watering traditional bread of Campeche, is a beloved tasty treat that travelers can enjoy at Panadería La Huachita in Hecelchakán. Travelers have the chance to attend bread-making tours and classes, a direct and hands-on experience that is unforgettable. Volunteers are also welcome here to help out in the bakery, especially during times of increased bread sales such as the Festival de Pan and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

An interesting aspect of Pan de Pomuch bakeries is their traditional ovens, made from stones, bricks and glass. When it’s time to bake the bread, firewood is used to give the loaves a delicious flavor. Baking bread in these ovens is more involved than cooking them all at once; rather, each loaf has a specific time, temperature and sequence of baking to ensure a successful batch.
