ELONGA is the local link between interns and Namibian organizations, media, and educational institutions. Depending on your skills and passion, you, as an international volunteer, can aid local schools, orphanages, health clinics, media companies, tourism groups, and environmental projects, and several other important initiatives. Namibia Conservation Travel Volunteer Program

The Conservation Travel Foundation is seeking passionate volunteers to participate as an education assistant in English and computer lessons at Grootberg Primary School in Namibia, under the supervision of the local teachers. The volunteer will engage in long term sustainable projects with the goal of improving the livelihoods of both the children and community. In addition, the volunteer will have the opportunity to reach out to the local community through projects aimed at bettering the quality of education for all community members.

why It Matters?

This project allows the school and Conservation Tourism Foundation volunteers to work in harmony and help the community’s children gain essential skills and work towards a brighter future. This volunteer experience will positively impact development in conservation, social welfare and education for the long term. Jason Nott, Coordinator

Jason is Foundation Coordinator and has been living in Namibia since he was a child and has extensive educational and work experience in conservation and sustainable tourism. Jason believes this program allows participants to enhance the lives of local communities, ensuring long term preservation of Namibia’s natural resources.

Tristan Cowley, Trustee

Tristan is a Foundation Trustee and grew up with a love and passion for the environment. Following his family’s tourism footsteps, Tristan has been specializing in naturalist guided safaris to Namibia since his founded Tou Safaris in 2003. In 2008 it merged with another organization to create Ultimate Safaris, a renowned specialist guided safaris company.

Martin Webb-Bowen, Trustee

Martin is a Foundation Trustee, helping oversee the running of Ultimate Safaris. From the 1990s until its 2008 incorporation into Ultimate Safaris, Martin ran a Namibian company called SandyAcre Safaris. Martin has a passion for assisting in rural development and conservation practices, as well as arranging unforgettable individual and group holidays in Namibia.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive to a warm Campechano welcome with a delicious lunch at El Marganzo Restaurant and a streetcar ride through the beautiful city of San Francisco de Campeche. A delicious dinner at Los Portales Restaurant and a free night to explore the area await you.

Day 2: Start your second day off with a trip to Hecelchakán for a traditional breakfast, as well as a trip to Becal to take part in a sombrero-making workshop and the opportunity to purchase authentic artisan goods. From here, you will travel to Isla Arena and pay a visit to and eat at Wotoch Aayin, a thriving crocodile sanctuary, restaurant and overnight stop!

Day 3: Day 3 gets off to an early start with birdwatching and a nature tour, as well as a birding boat trip and a visit to the petrified forest near Isla Arena. After lunch at the crocodile house, it’s back to San Francisco for its famous evening light and sound show.

Day 4: Get ready to explore several Campeche communities! After a breakfast in the village of Escárcega, you will spend your day visiting Calakmul, Conhuás and Balamkú.

Day 5: A trip to Valentín Natural, a nature reserve in the Valentín community, will have you exploring a beautiful botanical garden, relaxing at a lush lagoon, and flying through the air on a zipline! After transferring to Cristóbal Colón, you have the opportunity to hike through the many nature trails and also view the famous Voladores de Papantla. The Voladores consist of men dressed in traditional clothing who act as birds and “fly” from a tall, narrow pole. It’s truly a sight to be seen firsthand!

Day 6: After a community breakfast in Cristóbal Colón, you will have the chance to explore this community’s stunning caves and travel to the community of Echeverría Castellot, which boasts great opportunities for hiking and taking in the surrounding natural beauty.

Day 7: During this 7th day, you will travel to the community of 20 de Noviembre, where you will participate in artisanal community workshops and enjoy a traditional lunch and spend a tranquil night in the community of Castellot II.

Day 8: Experience the sight of ancient Mayan ruins at the archaeological zones of Chicanná, Becán, and Xpujil. A trip to the natural wells in Miguel Colorado is a beautiful way to top off the day before returning to San Francisco for your final night in this birder’s paradise.

Day 9: Enjoy a goodbye breakfast before leaving for the airport, bringing home wonderful memories of your birding experiences in Campeche.

Research in Castellot II

Researchers, students and nature-loving visitors are welcome in Castellot II, one of Calakmul’s most prominent hubs for scientific and natural research. Activities available in Castellot II include animal tracking and nature observation. Castellot II offers an abundances of senderos, which are lush nature paths perfect for scientific and academic experiences, such as zoological and botanical cataloguing, in this Calakmul community.

Castellot II has comfortable accommodation in furnished bungalows or in their recently-upgraded camping zone. A kitchen and dining room is located near the bungalows, but a separate dining hall and cooking facilities are available to campers closer to the nature paths.

why It Matters?

Scientific research and study in Castellot II contributes to a local effort to understand the biodiversity and conservation management in Mexico. Locals have a huge interest in preserving the natural heritage around them, and cataloguing the flora and fauna that call it home, but are unable to manage it alone.
