Calkiní, Mayan for “Throat of the Sun,” is a quaint municipality at the northern end of Campeche. Home to about 15,000 people, Calkiní encompasses communities with ancient ruins, farming villages, biosphere reserves, and joyous festivals. Highlights in Calkiní include the famous jipi hats of Becál that can be compared to Panama hats, the tall ancient Mayan ruins in Nunkiní, and craft classes such as hammock-making or mat-weaving.
