Craft Workshop
The Craft Workshop is an educational travel experience for visitors to Campeche’s extraordinary archaeological zone of Calakmul. It features 2 educational crafting experiences: embroidery and wood-working.
This workshop will teach you crafting basics and help you create your own Campechano souvenir to bring home.
The workshop is a sustainable learning experience that supports the community. Come for the skills, leave equipped with joyful memories of meaningful cultural exchange.
why It Matters?
The Fundacion Haciendas del Mundo Maya (FHMM) has been active in the Calakmul communities for several years, collaborating with community members on development, education, nutrition and learning artisanal skills. This workshop is a product of community commitment to growth- and their products speak to the incredible skills they’ve learned and can now share with visitors.

Visitors have the choice between two craft experiences at the 20 de Noviembre craft center:
Embroidery
Colorful Mexican embroidery is found around the country- but the embroidery in 20 de Noviembre is special. Calakmul, because of its cultural melange, means its embroidery is influenced by patterns and stitches characteristic of other parts of Mexico like Chiapas and Vera Cruz. As a result, the products are totally unique from other places.
This lessons lasts 2 hours and participants will leave with their very own embroidered Campechano handkerchief.
Wood Working
Remember shop class from middle school? This is similar- but way cooler! Learn techniques for carving regular pieces of scrap wood into boxes, kitchenware, panels. Your own creation will become a perfect gift or souvenir. What makes this endeavor truly special is 20 de Noviembre’s commitment to sustainability. All of the materials used for wood carving creation are sourced from the region- and none of them come from living trees. All the wood has been collected from the ground. A wood-working class at the 20 de Noviembre craft center means promoting the sustainability of the fragile and wonderful biosphere.

Embroidery is a family tradition for Doña Rosa, passed down generation to generation as a necessary skill for clothes-making. Her traditional designs epitomize the heart & soul of Campeche: warm, floral and bright. Doña Rosa loves sharing her skills with visitors so be sure to come and check her studio out!
